On April 3, 2010, Apple officially launched its much anticipated tablet: the iPad. It was the most hyped tech product of the year, but for many of us the hype turned out to be justified. My own Web browsing habits were immediately changed by the iPad. Indeed, I'm writing a whole series currently about how the iPad and other non-PC devices are changing the way we consume media. For some people the smartphone has had the biggest impact so far on their Web browsing habits, but for me it's been the iPad.

Quick: what words are Silicon Valley singles more likely to use than other Americans when describing themselves on Internet dating sites?

Try these: queer, decadent, robot, raiding, wacky and telepathic, to name a few.

Musician and exerimental media dude R. Luke Dubois aggregated data from 21 online dating sites in order to create this awesome visualization of the 20,262 unique words found in the dating profiles of more than 19 million single Americans. He then combined that info with geographical data to create an atlas of how people describe themselves and the people they want to be with. Each word appears in the place it is used more frequently than anywhere else in the country.

The singles data was harvested from Match.com, LavaLife, PlentyOfFish, Chemistry.com, Ok Cupid, Nerve.com, eHarmony, SinglesNet, PerfectMatch.com, FriendFinder, Great Expectations,  AmericanSingles.com, Date.com, Christian Mingle, Gay.com, Blacksingles.com, Jdate, AsiaFriendFinder, Alt.com, and Collarme.com.

And in case you were wondering, this is not an April Fool's joke. The technorati just really love their robots, okay?

Why I Decided to Work at a Startup After Graduating

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. In order to provide a sustainable, best of the breed RSS to Email experience, we've chosen to keep this as a paid subscription service. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

Two years ago, as a Harvard senior studying economics and math, I was faced with the inevitable decision — what to do after graduating. I was fortunate to have great options, including offers of direct admission to business school at Harvard and Stanford. But I ultimately decided to forego traditional job opportunities.

Instead, I accepted a job at Rapleaf, which was then an 18-person technology startup in San Francisco.

In retrospect, I have grown more resolute that my decision to work at a startup was correct. As I've watched the career trajectories of many of my friends that have entered different types of jobs, I have formulated three principles of entry-level jobs for ambitious young job seekers deciding on a career track -– principles that may lead more people to opt for a startup career.

Take a job where you are a decision-maker. The first principle is to join a firm that maximizes the number of decisions per capita. In most entry-level jobs, your work helps to inform the decisions of more senior employees, but you make few decisions yourself. For example, a typical consulting analyst provides research that a partner will incorporate into their own recommendations, but they do not formulate the recommendations themselves. However, in an organization with a large number of decisions that need to be made per capita, decision-making authority will be delegated to you immediately. While the decisions will be small initially, they not only allow you to learn more quickly, but also enable you to prove yourself and earn increasing amounts of responsibility.

A well-funded, fast-growing startup that typically has an over-abundance of decisions that need to be made. Even interns that work at Rapleaf are generally given small areas that they're responsible for, and as they prove themselves, those areas can grow as quickly as the employee's capabilities. While the rate of learning generally slows after six months in most jobs, I have found that it actually accelerates at some startups because of this accumulation of decision-making ability. Find true meritocracy. The second principle is to seek out a company that promotes true meritocracy, independent of your age. Over the course of a career, many industries are meritocratic, though few are truly meritocratic for 22-year-olds. In most industries, independent of how talented you are, there is a career track that you are generally required to follow and it is impossible to accelerate beyond a certain pace. Due to their size and culture, many startups seek out the best ideas internally, and they reward the best talent -– independent of age. For ambitious and talented young employees, it is possible to skip several steps of a typical career track, and promotion can occur quickly. Love your job. The third principle is to do something you love with colleagues you admire. In an environment where you are working because you want to, you will learn more, accomplish more, and will be more likely to succeed. I work long hours in my job -– not because there is an expectation that I do so, but because I feel passionate about the projects I work on and enjoy the impact I have. The hard work in turn translates into more opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.

Evaluating other options

Of course, there are downsides to startups. First, all of these benefits are contingent on being at a quickly-growing, meritocratic company with a strong team; the experience could be very different at the wrong startup. Additionally, extreme meritocracy means that you will have to perform well and work hard in order to succeed. Finally, to succeed at a startup, one generally needs to thrive on ambiguity; unlike a college problem set, startups face questions without prescribed answers (and sometimes not even formulated questions).

Perhaps due to these risks, and also due to the low presence of startup recruiting teams at universities, startups are an undersubscribed career option for young job seekers. But for ambitious and talented graduates, they provide the chance for extraordinarily quick career acceleration, a fast rate of learning, and the opportunity to be passionate about one's work.

Travis May is head of strategy and operations at Rapleaf.

China Sheds Light on New Solar Power Plans After Japanese Nuclear Disaster

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. China will ramp up its deployment of solar power and cut its power capacity target for nuclear power by 2020 in the wake of the nuclear crisis in Japan, according to the country's National Development and Reform Commission.

The country's previous goal was to create nuclear plants capable of producing 80 gigawatts of electricity by 2020 and enough solar power and wind power farms to generate 20 gigawatts of electricity. The new plan involves reducing the power target for nuclear power and increasing the amount of power produced by renewable energy sources like solar and wind power — though there wasn't a specific wattage target. The average household in the U.S. uses around 920 kilowatt-hours per month.

Solar power farms use flat photovoltaic panels that absorb sunlight and convert it to electricity. Typical wafer-style solar panels can capture around 30 percent of the sunlight shining on them and convert it into electricity. Flexible, thin-film photovoltaic cells that can be placed on most surfaces can only capture anywhere from 15 to 20 percent of the sunlight shining on them. One photovoltaic cell typically generates around a watt of power. Solar panels that are seen throughout the world are large collections of photovoltaic cells — which are usually around 6 inches across each.

The new plans came after a 9.0-magnitude quake struck off the northeast coast of Japan and spawned a massive tsunami that exceeded the damage threshold of the Japan's nuclear power plants. The quake cut off power to the plants, and the tsunami that followed the earthquake destroyed diesel-powered generators that were providing backup power to the plant — meaning there was no clean water pumping into the reactor to keep the fuel rods cool. That set off a chain of events that led to reports of leaking radiation.

The crisis in Japan set off a large amount of increased interest in solar power stocks, but it was short-lived as those companies quickly came back to reality. But the nuclear disaster has opened up an opportunity for solar power companies to garner some interest from venture capitalists and other investors over the next several months as the disaster's backlash has produced a pretty large public response.

Google Joins NFC Forum to Help Promote Mobile Payments

Google is once again throwing its weight behind near-field communications (NFC) technology by joining the NFC Forum, an industry association which has been advancing the technology for years.

The news is yet another sign that Google has high hopes for NFC, which will let you make purchases and transfer information securely using your phone, or other mobile devices. The announcement is especially intriguing since it was revealed yesterday that Google is no longer support QR barcodes for Google Places. We also learned earlier this week that the company has teamed up with Mastercard and Citigroup to implement NFC in Android phones.

Google is joining the NFC Forum as a principal member, the second-highest level of membership in the organization. That entitles Google to appoint a voting representative in the forum's technical, marketing, compliance committees and working groups. Principal members can also use their own in-house labs for NFC Forum testing and certification, propose initiatives to the group, and designate people to run for positions that would lead committees and working groups.

Chip companies Intel and CSR also raised their membership level in the group to the principal level. In addition to Google, the NFC Forum announced today that it has also added 31 new members, including Hitachi and Daimler AG.

Even though some believe that NFC technology is overhyped, it's hard to ignore the confluence of NFC hardware, interested companies, and participating retailers that may finally let it take off. Google included NFC in its latest flagship Android phone, the Nexus S, and we reported earlier this month that it's begun tests for NFC in New York and San Francisco. Many other companies, including RIM and Nokia, have discussed using the technology as well (though it seems that Apple may still be on the fence). Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and T-Mobile also said last fall that they would team up on a mobile payment system — dubbed Isis — for smartphones.

How open is open? Google is reportedly tightening access to its open source Android mobile operating system, as well as being more restrictive about the sort of tweaks manufacturers can make to the OS, multiple executives tell Businessweek.

That seems to go against Android's open source nature. When Google first launched the OS in 2008, it was heralded as a completely open platform that would compete against Apple's closed iPhone OS. That meant anyone could install Android in their devices and make any changes necessary to it. But now that Android is no longer the scrappy mobile underdog — it's now the global smartphone leader with 31 percent market share — Google can no longer afford to be idealistic.

Open source advocates will surely take issue with Android's new direction, but anyone who has been following the platform closely will likely view it as necessary. Users, developers and device manufacturers have been complaining about Android's fragmentation issues — which includes apps and features only being available on certain phones, as well as Android updates that take forever to reach older devices — for some time. Google's only real solution is to take a stronger role in managing Android's development and deployment.

Google has recently been enforcing "non-fragmentation clauses" with Android licensees, which prevents them from changing Android code too much, sources tell Businessweek. The clauses themselves are nothing new, but Google is apparently being much more vigilant about enforcing them.

Other recent moves by Google may face scrutiny from regulators. Sources say Google has tried to hold up the release of Android phones on Verizon that use Microsoft's Bing search engine. (Microsoft this morning announced that it's filing antitrust complaints against Google in Europe.)

Last week, it was revealed that Google will be delaying the release of Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" to the public — something that falls in line with the news that Google wants tighter control of Android.

It was inevitable that Google would eventually move away from being completely open with Android. Being completely open allowed an immature Android to gain its footing. Now that it's a mobile titan, Google needs to ensure that Android  can grow up and offer an experience as polished as Apple's iOS.

Netflix Planning Overseas Invasion, Slowly but Surely

It's been a long time coming. The video-on-demand provider Netflix has been talking about launching its service as a streaming-only version outside the U.S. for a while, but only now does it seem that the company is really getting ready to test its service globally, Reuters reports.

Netflix has put out job listings seeking people for its Hillsboro, Oreg. customer service call center. While based domestically, the positions will support Netflix customers outside of North America, and the applicants must be fluent in a foreign language in addition to English. The languages listed are Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian and European), and Spanish (Latin American and European).

One of the jobs, the position of a Training Supervisor, also explicitly calls for help in growing globally: "We are rapidly expanding internationally and are looking for a very bright Training Supervisor to help us educate our CS reps for that growth."

Netflix hasn't publicly said which country or region outside the U.S. will be the first international market for the company. Judging by the languages listed here, most of Europe is covered as well as important markets in Asia and Latin America. Also, the reach seems to cover countries with deep penetration of laptops, computers and games console networks, which Netflix could leverage for its streaming-only service.

Netflix did say back in January 2010 that as far as demand goes, Europe could be first: "The big market for Hollywood content (after the U.S.) is Europe…Third is Asia. Fourth is the rest of the world." (Canada was "international-lite", according to Chief Executive Reed Hastings.) In addition, Netflix was planning for a launch in the UK in 2004 but scrapped its plans to build its domestic business, which now boasts some 20 million subscribers in the U.S. After all this I wouldn't be surprised to hear Netflix first going after a major European market, as it sets out for world domination.

TidalTV, a video ad technology company, announced today that it has raised $30 million in funding.

The company's product helps advertisers deliver ads to target demographics across online video, mobile video, and television. TidalTV offers what it calls "zero waste advertising", where it optimizes the distribution of in-stream ads so companies can reach the market they're looking for. The company says that if its platform doesn't allow your ad to reach the audience you want, you get your money back.

eMarketer estimates that by 2015, 76% of internet users will be watching online video each month, and online video advertising spending will increase from $1.97 billion to $5.71 billion.

The round of funding was led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), with participation from existing investors Comcast Interactive Capital and Valhalla Partners. The funding will be used to accelerate growth, expand into new markets and to deploy new products.

TidalTV, which is headquartered in Baltimore, has raised $61M to date.

Forget Swapping Headphones: MyStream Lets You Wirelessly Share Music

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Have you ever sat next to a friend on the train and wanted to listen to the music he or she was listening to, only to be forced to uncomfortably share headphones? MyStream, which is launching its free iPhone app today, wants to change this by allowing you to share your music wirelessly with friends.

MyStream allows you to see what other people in the same wireless or Bluetooth network are listening to. It lets you listen in on the songs other MyStream users are listening to, or 30 second clips from other songs on playlists they've created.

Says Richard Zelson, founder of MyStream, "Imagine immediately being able to listen to a song stored on a friend's iPhone at the same time as them without needing to share their headphones or be tethered to them using a splitter."

Richard Zelson came up with the idea when he was traveling in Europe and wanted to listen to his friends' songs on the train. After being frustrated that the only way to do this was to share headphones, he set out to find a solution.

All audio is streamed via an iPhone's WiFi or Bluetooth wireless technology, so the application works whether on a bus or plane and doesn't require a connection to the Internet. When the application is being used it is public to anyone in the wireless network, and more than one person can listen in on the music. According to Richard, when the application is running there is an additional 20% battery drain on the phone.

With regards to potential copyright law violations, the company believes it has a low level of liability. The application does not enable any music sharing that is not already possible through portable speakers or an audio splitter.

MyStream's business model is based around revenue from 5% commissions it receives from songs sold through the application, advertising from the bar on the app, and in the future, potentially from money it will charge for the app.

MyStream was founded in June 2010 by Richard Zelson, who is a first time entrepreneur. The company, which currently has five employees, has raised $800,000 in funding, $300,000 of which came from friends and family and $500,000 of which came from the founder of Blue Water Capital.

Mobile RSS Readers: What's Popular & What Works

RSS feeds were a big driver of innovation in the Web 2.0 era. RSS Readers like Bloglines, Newsgator and Google Reader became the go-to services for people to subscribe to the latest news and blog posts. Over the past couple of years, mobile phones have become a major content consumption device. Yet RSS Readers have struggled to make the transition. In part this has been due to the increased importance of Twitter and Facebook for circulating news and information. But it's also because tracking RSS feeds on your smartphone is a user interface challenge - and few, if any, startups have solved it.
